Coal Fired Power
with FGD Wet Scrubbers

Coal accounts for about 60% or more of all electric power generated in the United States. Having reasonable costs, a straight-forward generating process and many centuries of known reserves, it appears that coal will continue to grow as the primary power production method. The challenge for coal generated power stations has been emission control of sulfur dioxide (SO2).

FGD or flue gas desulfurization is a very effective method for removing these emissions and was initiated in Japan about 35 years ago. By introducing a sorbent, usually limestone or lime in the exhaust stream, with either wet or dry dispersion devices, they are capable of reducing emissions of SO2 by up to 95%.

With more than half the coal fired plants using the wet scrubbed method and planned conversions of others scheduled for the near future, it seemed a logical fit for Townley to introduce our premier products into this important clean air initiative.

For more than 15 years, Townley products have provided a critical service in more than eighty FGD scrubbed power plants across North America. Townley has solved many maintenance and performance problems in the FGD circuit and elsewhere in limestone prep and coal handling.

Townley Offers:
  • Maintenance friendly slurry pumps
  • Suction and discharge hose
  • Towniprene lined pipe
  • Effective knife gate valves for slurry and bottom ash service
  • Tailing hose for terrain changes
  • Submersible pumps for transfer of slurry, ash or trash water to settling ponds
  • High performance isolation butterfly valves for recirculation and process water

Townley is a recognized leader in part reduction programs, process efficiency improvements with the overall goal of reducing maintenance time and improving your cost per kilowatt hour.

WRK FGD Slurry Pump - A compelling alternative to the complicated wet-end assemblies found in the installed base of Warman, ASH, Hazleton, AC and other OEM pumps. Consisting of only 4 main parts with convenient lifting eyes, these pump are designed to bolt to your drive, fit exactly to your existing piping and meet all performance specifications. Finally a pump the maintenance crew actually likes! Sizes from 350, 450, 550 and many others on request.

Series 1000 Suction & Discharge Hose - Reduce vibration and provide easy transition for older plants with fit problems. Available in straight, reducer with outlets or taps. Eliminate OEM multiple pipe assemblies with one P/N. Most any lengths, wear tubes material and I.D.

MSP Submersibe Slurry Pump - Cost effective replacement for vertical cantilever style sump pumps.
Available in 2"- 10" with 5-150 HP. Standard high-chrome wetted parts. Easily moved with lifting bail and Townley flex discharge hose. Perfect for coal tunnel, bottom ash, scrubber sumps and waste water run-off. Optional multiple sensor protection box to ensure pump life.

80TP Knife Gate Valve - Townley's most versatile bidirectional valve features a unique bonded-in Towniprene urethane lined body and seat. Coupled with a precision stainless steel gate & stem, this valve is perfect for slurry diversion and isolation with assurance of easy actuation when you need it. The unique flush bottom of the seal ensures no clogging or trapping of debris to prevent positive sealing. Townley offers a complete rebuild service back to factory specifications. Especially useful with high chloride recycled slurries. Available in 2" to 96" I.D.

80BA Knife Gate Valve - For severe duty, this rugged, bidirectional valve features high-chrome inserts at the face to resist impact and abrasion found in bottom ash and coal byproduct applications. The inserts are locked and sealed inplace with the same urethane seat as the 80TP. This is a great valve for those tougher circuits. Townley offers a complete rebuild service back to factory specifications.

80 SS Knife Gate Valve - A stainless steel valve designed for those applications where chemical resistance is required. This precision ground seat provides directional sealing.

80SCEHA - This self contained electric powered hydaulic valve is perfect for remote or isolated areas of your plant where factory air and hydraulic lines are not practical. AC or DC these units can be remotely actuated with a "DeviceNet™" interface. Especially useful in settling ponds or containment areas.

Series 120 Butterfly Valve - Manufactured new or rebuilt from your used valve, this large diameter valve is the right choice for solution diversion or isolation for water or slurries. Especially popular in power plants for cooling tower and condensate water handling, these bi-directional fabricated valves feature a one-piece shaft, urethane lined body and a rubber lined disc. Our production process is designed to fit in a typical planned outage timeline. Sizes available from 20" to 144" I.D. with complete actuation options.

Super Flex Hose - This versatile hose has found new use in power plants, especially in tailing lines as a strain relief for rigid pipe and to ease runs over uneven terrain. Also can be found in suction and discharge use where severe flexure is required. Recently used to replace a cyclone high-wear "limestone reject line" improving wear cycles 2-3x rigid pipe.

Ball Mill Chute - With the in-house capability to cast, fabricate or line chutes, Townley recently replaced the OEM chutes with a high wear cast alloy, improving wear life and reducing maintenance time. Townley technical reps can review your wear problems and create unique solutions.

FGD Hydrocyclone Limestone Classifier - Custom designed for limestone preparation, this cyclone features a one-piece urethane cone body and threaded apex along with a wear resistant alloy feed-chamber. Drastically reducing the number of parts used in typical OEM cyclones, thereby easing maintenance with less part numbers. Townley also lines launderer tubs and distribution manifolds, to improve life cycles. And can provide urethane or rubber overflows.

Urethane Gaskets and Wedges - Maintenance friendly describes these simple products found in many power plants. Especially useful for older plants to offset misaligned fittings or couplings. Wedges can be used for slight turns in pipe without the expense of fabricated pipe. Designed with a handle to ensure precise alignment between flanges, this feature doubles as a "finger saver." Townley can easily design custom sizes and formulations for your application.

FGD Scrubber Nozzles - Designed to replace fragile ceramic nozzles, these cost effective urethane alternatives can be manhandled without damaging. Many sizes and designs available to replace OEM styles.

Site Audit - Our local technical teams have over 15 years experience in powerplant proceses. Invite them in to review the condition of your process equipment or discuss annoying problems or material failures. We can make solid, creative recommendations to improve your wear and provide cost effective alternatives to your issues.
